"GREENER EARTH" Tip of the week!

Tip #13-Buy the book Fifty Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth  by The Earthworks Group.  See how many ways you can change the world!

Tip #12-The news in Wichita is talking a lot about our water bill increasing ...so help your family and don't waste your drinking water by pouring it down the sink.  Instead, pour it on a nearby thirsty plant or top off your goldfish bowl!  To save water over time, keep a large pitcher of drinking water in the refrigerator so you don't need to contiuously run the tap at each meal or snack!

Tip #11-Always scoope your pet's waste when you take him or her on walks.  If possible, pick it up with a paper bag or old newspaper.  Otherwise, your pooch's waste could sit inside the plastic bag in a landfill for 100's of years.

Tip #10-Even if spiders creep you out (like the one Coach Funke brought us :) don't squich them.  There are an estimated 40,000 species of spiders, and they all eat insects.  Spiders are an important part of the food web and provide natural pest control as they eat pesky bugs.

Tip #9-The energy we save when we recycle one glass bottle is enough to light a traditional lightbulb for 4 hours.

Tip #8-Even greeting cards can be reused!  Cut off the pretty fronts and use them as postcards or turn them into a gift tag or new card!

Tip #7-Most families throw away about 88 pounds of plastic every year!  Recycle whenever possible.

Tip #6-Every steel can is 100 percent recyclable.  It can be recycled over and over again into products like bicycles and, of course, new cans
.
Tip #5-To save energy always turn off the lights when you leave a room or go to sleep for the night.

Tip #4-Only 30% of newspapers are recycled in the United States.  When you are with your relatives during the Winter Break remind them to recycle newspapers AND aluminum cans!  Better yet, recycle the aluminum cans at your holiday get together and bring them to the science room or the trailor next to the MPR.

Tip #3-Every steel can is 100% recyclable!  It can be recycled over and over again into products like bicycles and, or course, new cans.  Recycle during the Thanksgiving holidays!

Tip #2- LANDFILL...Simply put, a landfill is an open hole in the ground where all our trash is buried.  Landfills are designed to prevent waste from mixing with groundwater and to reduce odors.  Most well-made landfills have a thick plastic liner between the ground and the trash, just like in the movie we saw.  They add a layer of soil everyday to cover up the trash on top.  These materials do not decompose quickly and they can stay there for hundreds of thousands of years.  Do you remember the activity we did in class to find out how long it takes for things to decompose?  Landfills are now thought of as a last resort.  RECYCLE!!!!

Tip #1- Be sure to cross styrofoam cups off your family's grocery list.  With the amount of foam cups Americans use each year, we could circle the earth 436 times.

Recycle means taking something old and turning it into something new.  You can recycle your beverage containers at many places such as recycling centers, places with recycling bins, at your curbside and even here at WCS.  We have an aluminum can recycling trailer back near the MPR.  Over the years,WCS has donated thousands of dollars to the Kansas Humane Society with the profits from our aluminum cans.  We have a brand new trailer this year and we hope to take our can collecting to new heights!  Start your own recycling trash can at home to save aluminum cans and then recycle them to the trailer!
